Jewell community mourns passing of trustee Jeff Comment

Jeffrey W. Comment, Vice Chair of the William Jewell College Board of Trustees, died unexpectedly on October 30. Comment, who was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Helzberg Diamonds, was named to the college's Board of Trustees in 1999. He was 60 years old.

“William Jewell has lost a good friend and a valued servant-leader,” said President David Sallee. “Jeff's generous, caring spirit and overriding sense of concern and compassion for others was a magnificent gift that he gave so freely. The Jewell community extends its deepest sympathies to Martha and to Jeff's entire family.”

The Kansas City Star described Comment as “someone who loved God, his family and community, and who influenced people to do more than just write a check, but also to give of themselves to someone in need.”

For nearly a decade, The Star noted, Comment “played Santa for critically ill children, flying across the country at his own expense, while running Helzberg Diamonds in North Kansas City . After meeting an 11-year-old boy who died of AIDS a month later, Comment was inspired to write Santa's Gift. The book relates his life-changing encounters with the children and includes reflections on giving by celebrities such as Elton John. It also tells how others can get involved.”

Comment grew up in Indiana and attended the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in Bloomington . He held several senior positions with retailers including Burdines and Jordan Marsh in Miami . He also was president and chief operating officer of John Wanamaker Department Stores of Philadelphia.

In 1988, Comment joined Helzberg Diamonds as President, and the company quickly grew from 80 to 145 stores. In 1995, Helzberg Diamonds became a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and Comment was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, reporting directly to Warren Buffett. The company now has 264 stores in 37 states and nearly 3,000 employees.

Comment collapsed while dancing with his wife of 34 years, Martha Comment, at a fundraising event at Kansas City 's Starlight Theatre. The cause of death was not immediately known.

In addition to his service to William Jewell, Comment most recently served as a director on the Salvation Army National Advisory Board, on the board of directors for Jewelers of America, the board of regents for Rockhurst University, and as a trustee at Midwest Research Institute, among other interests.

The Star noted that during the annual Kansas City Mayors' Prayer Breakfast in 2003, Comment emphasized the need for God's presence in everyone's life. “He gives every one of us a vision for what he wants us to do in our life,” Comment said at the time.

Comment believed that his purpose was to make a difference in people's lives, and he lived that vision, those who knew him said.

“The holidays will not be as bright without his presence, but his spirit remains with us,” Randall L. O'Donnell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kansas City's Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, told The Star. “Because of him, we have all learned how to better give the gift of ourselves.”
