Frances Tapp Neth ’25, April 11,
2005, of Liberty, Mo.
Born in 1903, Frances was the oldest known
living
graduate of WJC. She was part of an enduring
Jewell legacy family, which included two
sons and
eight grandchildren who are alumni of the
college.
One of her 22 great-grandchildren graduated
from
Jewell in May.

1940s
Jack
Wilson ’47,
a retired Episcopalian priest, has been made
a Professor of Psychiatry on the faculty of the
Ukrainian Medical Academy at
Poltova, Ukraine. Jack is currently the President
of The Foundation
for International Professional Exchange, which
facilitates the
exchange of persons and information to and from
former Cold War
countries. The foundation is branching out to
Uganda and Rwanda.
Jack also works with municipal governments to
set up “sister city”
endeavors. Jack and his wife, Bettie, live in
Pueblo, Colo.
1950s
Charlotte Burns Bird ’50 was recently honored
as “Woman of the Year” by
the Missionary Society of the Central United
Methodist Church in
Charlotte, N.C. This honor recognized her leadership
in the church’s
Adopt-A-Village program in the village of Newton,
Sierra Leone,
West Africa. In two years the project raised
money and collected a
railroad car of supplies. The villagers have
cleared and planted 154
acres of ground by hand and are harvesting cassava.
The clinic and
school, mostly destroyed by the 11-year civil
war, has been rebuilt
and refurbished. A vocational school has been
established, a mission
house has been built and supplies of school materials
and medicine
are now available to the 500 villagers. The goal
to make the people
of Newton self-sufficient by 2006 is well on
its way.
Loyd Gentry ’59 has been called as Interim
Minister at the Lawson (Mo.)
United Christian & Presbyterian Church.

Robert Steinkamp ’67 was recently elected
mayor of Liberty, Mo.
1970s
Russ Cline ’71’s RCA Group was recently
selected as one of the Top 10
Small Businesses for 2005 by the Greater Kansas
City Chamber of
Commerce. RCA Group is an international marketing
and sports
promotion and production company based in Priarie
Village, Kan.
Russ, Melanie Griffin Cline ’78 and their
family live in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Jim Dunn ’71 was presented the Service
Award for Professional
Excellence by the Liberty, Mo., Rotary Club.
This award is presented
annually in recognition of a community member
for exceptional
professional achievement consistent with the
ideals of Rotary.
Howard Chrisman Jones ’73 received an Honorable
Mention in Set Design
at the recent World Stage Design 2005 conference
in Toronto. The
international competition included participation
from 532 designers
from 43 countries. In addition to set design,
categories recognized
included sound, lighting and costumes. Jones
was the only American
set designer to be recognized, with other set
design winners representing
the Philippines, Israel and Mexico. Jones received
the award
for his set design for a production of Ibsen’s “Hedda
Gabbler.” He
received the Citation for Achievement from William
Jewell in 1993.
Kathi Schirner Knop ’74 received the Kansas
Association of School
Librarians 2005 President’s Award. This
award is given to a library
media specialist who administers an outstanding
library media program.
Kathi is the Library Media Specialist at Shawnee
Mission East
High School in Prairie Village, Kan.
Dave Bassore ’77 has resigned as head football
coach at William Jewell
College and has assumed the head football coaching
position at
Olathe North High School, Olathe, Kan.
Debbie Unger Wardrop ’78 has resigned
from the
National Football League and will be assuming
the position of CEO of the Super Bowl XLII
Arizona Host Committee. Super Bowl 42 will be
played in Phoenix.
1980s
Holley Powell Smothers ’81 has been the
recipient of
numerous honors during the past several years
including: 2003 Missouri Federation of Teachers
and School Related Personnel Elementary and
Secondary Teacher of the Year; 2003 Missouri
Middle School Association Central Region Middle
School Teacher of the Year; 2004 Missouri Art
Education Association Middle School Teacher of
the
Year; and 2004-2006 STARR (Selected Teacher As
Regional Resources) Teacher. Holley, her husband
Greg, and two sons, David & Matthew, live
in
Jefferson City, Mo.
Shirley “Ann” Suddarth ’81 was named a “Volunteer in
Support of Education” by the Northland
Regional
Chamber of Commerce. Ann volunteers six hours
a day as the coordinator for the tutoring program
at
the William Jewell Writing Center. Ann lives
in
College Place West, Jewell’s senior adult
complex
right off the campus.

120th
birthday on February 11, as Missouri Secretary
of
State
Robin Carnahan ’83 spoke on “Politics
and Public
Service: My Life with the Carnahans of Missouri.” A
tea was given in honor of Bess Truman.
William Jeffrey Maloney ’84, an associate
with the international
law firm of Bryan Cave LLP, was elected
president of the Platte County (Mo.) Bar Association.
Beth Smith ’85 was selected as the recipient
of the Lee’s
Summit (Mo.) Literacy Award. This is the 23rd
year
that the International Reading Association has
selected a local winner.
Ellen Douglas Merritt ’88 recently had
a poem published
in International Who’s Who of Poetry. This
is her
third published poem. Ellen holds a master’s
degree
in psychology from Capella University, a diploma
from the Institute of Children’s Literature,
and
works as a lyricist with her husband Mark Merritt
in
their music business, Dream Hill Productions.
Ellen teaches youth in philosophy, spirituality
and
life skills at forceacademy.com. She is also
active in
community theatre. She and Mark reside in Mount
Airy, N.C.
Bobby Hennessey ’89 has been named the
General
Manager for John Chezik Honda in Kansas City
North. He also received the President’s
Award from
the Honda Corporation for Excellence in Business.
Bobby, Laura Chezik Hennessey ’90, and
their children
live in Overland Park, Kan.
Lucy Mason ’89 has been selected as “One
of America’s
Most Influential Women” by Forbes radio.
She was
interviewed on the air during a spring broadcast.
Lucy and her husband, Cris Sena, reside in
Lafayette, Calif.
Kurt Pycior ’89 is the incoming president
of the Board
of Directors for Hope House, an agency that cares
for abused mothers and children. Kurt and his
business partner, Steve Froehlich, built a house
with
donations from dozens of subcontractors, with
all
the profits ($85,000) from the sale of the home
going to Hope House.
Chad Smith ’89 was promoted to the position
of
District Administrator for District 39, Missouri
Board of Probation and Parole in Trenton, Mo.
Chad, his wife Shelly and their two children
reside
in Bethany, Mo.
1990s
Kristi Soligo ’91 was recently elected
to serve a twoyear
term on the Board of Directors of the Missouri
Association of Realtors. She is currently serving
on
the education committee.
Jonathan Duncan ’92 has been made a partner
with the
firm of Spencer Fane Britt & Browne LLP in
Kansas
City. Jonathan is in the Litigation & Dispute
Resolution Group focusing on education law and
sports litigation.
Jansen Slayden Fredal ’92 and her husband,
Don, have
opened up Social Suppers in Kansas City North.
It
is a meal solution facility where customers can
make 12 family-sized dinners in 2 hours.

Amy
R. Williams ’93, former business
service consultant for the State of
Nevada, has joined Truckee
Meadows Community College’s
Workforce Development and
Continuing Education Division as its new program
manager. Truckee Meadows is located in
Reno, Nev.
Kelly Austin ’94 is in her first year as
a tenure-track
Assistant Professor in Romance Languages and
Literature at the University of Chicago.
Andrea Brandes ’95 has recently accepted
the position
as Manager of International Education Finance
in
the Fishers, Ind., office of Sallie Mae. Her
new
duties include compliance and regulatory work,
with an emphasis on international business development
and immigration law.
Michael Pace ’95 is doing a Post-Doctoral
Fellowship
at Notre Dame. He and Karyn Johnson Pace ’95
reside
in Mishawaka, Ind.
Clay Kohler ’97 owns Kohler Lawn and Outdoor,
Inc.,
which provides lawn care service to customers,
including sprinkler systems, chemical applications
and landscaping. Clay, Rebecca Ramsey Kohler ’96,
and
their two sons, Ramsey and Avery, live in Pleasant
Hill, Mo.
Jason Parks ’98 has joined Adamson Advertising
as an
account supervisor.
Angela Paul Owen ’98 received her associate’s
degree in
nursing and is now working as an Emergency
Room Registered Nurse at the University of New
Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.
Carrie Fletcher Schmid ’98 graduated from
medical
school in 2002 and from San Antonio Military
Pediatric Center’s residency this summer.
She will
begin a fellowship at Harvard Medical School
for
Clinical Genetics starting in the fall.
Mandy Martin Levings ’99 has been named
one of the
“40 under 40” individuals recognized
by the Kansas
City area business publication, Ingram’s.
Mandy is
a Senior Vice President at Fleishman-Hillard,
where
she heads the Biotechnology/Health Care Team,
one
of the largest biotechnology accounts in the
global
network. Mandy serves on the board of the Brain
Injury Association of Greater Kansas City and
works with the WJC Career Mentoring Program.
Mandy, Eric Levings ’98 and daughter Ally,
live in the
Liberty, Mo., area.
2000s
Douglas Austin ’01 has been commissioned
as a second
lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after graduating
from Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force
Base, Montgomery, Ala. Douglas is an air battle
manager assigned to the 325th Air Control
Squadron, Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City,
Fla.
Michael Jackson ’01 earned
a master of music degree
in church music from Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ryan Schreckenghaust ’01 is pursuing his
master’s in
ministry leadership at Rockbridge University
and
has accepted a position as Middle School Ministry
Coordinator at Lee’s Summit Community Church.
Rebekah Sullins Schreckenghaust ’02 recently
completed
her master’s in school counseling and is
currently
a counselor in the Hickman Mills (Mo.)
School District.
Jacob Stauffer ’01, who holds a J.D. from
Vanderbilt
University, has joined the insolvency practice
group
with Husch & Eppenberger, Kansas City.
Clint Thebeau ’01 is the Assistant General
Manager and
Director of Ticket Operations for the Youngstown
Steelhounds hockey team. Clint & Brooke live
in
Boardman, Ohio.
Jennifer Humburg Stevenson ’01 has joined
the
Fleishman-Hillard office in Sydney, Australia
as
Account Manager, splitting her time between the
bio-tech pharmaceutical group in Kansas City
and
helping launch the healthcare practice within
the
Australian market.
Dan Stevenson ’01 is
the Operations
Manager for Cerner Asia-Pacific. Jennifer and
Dan
reside in Sydney, Australia.
Jacquelyn Crenshaw ’02 is an Admissions
Counselor for
Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., with an
emphasis on home-schooled students. She has had
the opportunity to present a speech entitled “The
Homeschooled Student: The Tables Have Turned,”
at several national conferences.
Deanne Walters ’02 has joined the staff
of Hanover
College in their Office of Student Life. She
will
serve as the college’s assistant director
of Greek life.

Troy Hawkins ’03 has been awarded the
“Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant” honor
at Purdue University.
Katie Young ’03 will begin teaching middle
school language
arts and social studies in the Wentzville, Mo.,
school district in the fall.
O. E. Burke ’04 has opened an upscale
surf shop in Virginia Beach, Va. He
states that his shop reflects both
his Christian values and his love of
surfing.
Andrew Fischer ’04 has joined Zimmer Real
Estate
Services, focusing on industrial sales and leasing
on
the east side of the Kansas City metropolitan
