1950s

John Riley ’50 has retired for the second time in seven years from St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral, Jacksonville, Fla. His recent ministry was with 700 Senior Citizens and as chaplain to the Cathedral’s Gerontology Center. He now plans to resume work on his book, “Backstage at the Altar.”

Bill Hollis ’55 completed fifty years as an ordained Baptist minister. Earlier this year, he was honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus by the Dover Baptist Church in Manakin-Sabaot, Va. Jackie Williamson Hollis ’56 participated in a “Women Build” with Habitat for Humanity, representing WMU of the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. In a three-day period, approximately 45 women raised and completely enclosed a three-bedroom house for a woman and her three children. Jackie (and Bill) returned to Lynchburg, Va., and participated in the dedication of the house. Bill and Jackie reside in Richmond, Va.

1960s

Ivan Oestreich ’63 has retired from Sprint after nearly 40 years of service. Ivan began working with United Telephone in 1964. He has held numerous management positions through his years of service. Ivan lives in Clinton, Mo.

Ben Early ’66 has been named Associate Executive Director of the Illinois Baptist Association. Ben and his wife, Gloria, reside in Springfield, Ill.

Thomas R. Sharp ’66 has been appointed by Governor Bill Owens as Director of the Colorado Water Conservation Board. Thomas is also Director of the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority and the Colorado River Water Conservation District. Thomas is an attorney in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Larry Holley ’67 has been awarded The Carrie Francke Memorial Award. This award is given to those persons who have made a significant contribution to basketball in the state of Missouri. Larry received the award at the 2004 MBCA Academic All State Banquet. He joins a group of distinguished Missourians who have received the award, including Norm Stewart. Larry boasts an impressive coaching record of 657 wins at four-year colleges in Missouri.

Cheryl Smith Lewkowsky ’68 won an “Excellence in Teaching Award” at the 12th annual Missouri Governor’s Conference on Higher Education. The award program seeks to recognize the importance of the teaching profession and honor outstanding faculty. Award recipients are recognized for their dedication to higher education, their teaching achievements and their public service commitment. Cheryl, who teaches math, is a faculty member at Maple Woods Community College in Kansas City North.

1970s

Leonard Wilkerson ’72 is the Chief Medical Officer for United Healthcare of North and South Carolina. Len provides leadership and medical expertise in the development, implementation and medical interpretation of Medical/ Quality/Utilization policy, procedure and guidelines for a membership in North Carolina of 850,000 and South Carolina of 140,000 and 13,000 physicians and 135 hospitals. Len holds a B.A. in Chemistry from William Jewell College; a D. O. from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine; an M.B.A. from the University of South Florida, Tampa (summa cum laude); and an M.P.H. from the University of South Florida, Tampa (summa cum laude). Len now resides in Greensboro, N. C.

Collette King ’77 and another teacher filed a class action grievance on behalf of the teachers of the Kansas City, Mo., School District. Three years ago, the district announced a new program in which they planned to provide computers for every teacher and three additional computers for every classroom. Two years after taking the requisite productivity training, many teachers still had not received their computers. Following a hearing on the grievance, the district began rolling out computers to the teachers.

Tom Leip ’77 has been named the Assistant Athletic Director for Development at Portland State University in Portland, Ore.

Deb Power ’79 has recently made a career change. After working eight years at Northwest Missouri State University, she is now the Healthy Communities Manager for the Heartland Foundation in St. Joseph, Mo. The focus of her work is to build morale, encourage teamwork, and create enthusiasm with individuals and communities by empowering children and adults to improve their health and quality of life through education, economic vitality, and civic involvement. She still lives in Maryville, Mo., with her two sons, Evan and Dylan.

1980s

Donald Frank ’80 has his own private English conversation school, where he teaches approximately 15 Japanese students from college age up to 70-year-olds. He also introduces them to English and American culture. On the weekends, Don has a wedding ministry in Sapporo, Japan. C. Richard Moore III ’81 has been promoted to Vice President of Compensation, Benefits and Human Resources Information Services for Advance Auto Parts in Roanoke, Va. Richard has also been actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America for over 20 years and serves on the board of the Blue Ridge Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts in Roanoke.

Mary Stocksdale Petty ’81 made it possible for Praise Keepers to relocate their ministry and “Good as New” thrift shop to Tipton, Mo. Mary is a pianist for the Tipton United Methodist Church and Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Fortuna, Mo. She also volunteers for the Missouri River Hospice at Tipton Manor. Mary resides in Syracuse, Mo.

Curt McCutchan ’82 has been named pastor of the Abundant Life Church in Union, Mo. This church is a part of the New Frontiers, a worldwide network of nearly 300 churches which focus on the New Testament. Curt, his wife, Brenda Tounzen McCutchan ’82, and their four children reside in St. Joseph, Mo.

P J Beasley-Carlson ’83 has accepted a position as Research Manager for EFL Associates, a retained executive search firm in Overland Park, Kan.

F. Marshall Dicks ’85 owns a computer consulting firm and is the Director of Music for Christ Episcopal Church in Dearborn, Mich. Marshall, Rebekka, and son, Geoffrey, reside in Dearborn.

Greg Duncan ’88 and Amy Brown Duncan ’88 have recently opened the RTF (ready-to-finish) Furniture store in Liberty. For years, they have enjoyed finishing their own furniture and wanted to pursue a modern and unique furniture store devoted to their interest. Amy also continues as a Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics. Greg and Amy are deacons and Bible Study leaders in their church. Greg serves on the Liberty Parks and Recreation Board and Amy is on the Liberty School Board. Greg, Amy and their children, Stewart and Emily, reside in Liberty.

1990s

Jason Klumb ’90, former State Representative, has announced his decision to run for Missouri State Treasurer in the 2004 election. Jason is a Captain in the Missouri National Guard JAG Corps. He is a private pilot and a member of the Butler Presbyterian Church. He and his wife, Begonya, reside in Raymore, Mo.

Stacy Long Morgan ’93 has won the annual Leadership Excellence Award from the Social Security Administration’s Office of the General Counsel. She is Assistant Regional Counsel in the Kansas City office. Stacy, her husband, Aaron, and daughter, Madeline, live in Platte City, Mo.

Chad Wright ’94 and Chad Jones ’98 are both basketball coaches in the Kansas City area – Chad Wright at St. Pius X High School and Chad Jones at Smithville, Mo., High School. For the past two years, their teams have met in January, with Chad Wright’s team winning both times. The two coaches enjoy reminiscing about their WJC playing days and have remained good friends.

Gabrielle Chapin ’95 is now serving on the Board of Governors of the Quantico, Va.-based Marine Corps Association. Founded in 1913 by John A. Lejeune and others, the association’s role is “to disseminate knowledge of the military art and science” and “foster the spirit and preserve the traditions of the Marine Corps.” Capt. Chapin, a veteran of the Kosovo conflict and other operations with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, presently serves in Washington D.C. as a United States Senate Military Fellow.

Jason Graves ’95 has been named Marketing Director for The Lawrence Group. Jason’s responsibilities will include coordinating qualifications and proposals, creating portfolios for awards competitions, designing and producing marketing print materials and working with department systems and reports. Jason lives in St. Louis, Mo.

Krista Keck Mays ’95 and her husband, Danny, have recently accepted the positions of Directors of Music at Ascension Episcopal Church in Pueblo, Colo. Krista says she “enjoys spending time in the mountains and home schooling our three children.”

Bret Holder ’96, a United States Marine Corps Reserve Sergeant, was activated in January ’03 for Operation Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom as an assistant team leader with “C” Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion. During the war, he was attached to 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company and was part of the early and heavy fighting in An Nasiriyah, Iraq. His unit moved further North to the Suni Triangle, operating mostly out of Dawaniya and Al Kut. Bret’s team of special operators successfully completed over 30 combat missions, all of which were behind enemy lines. Among other awards, Bret received the Presidential Unit Citation, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Bret has resumed his studies as a law student at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and should graduate in May. He has also been accepted to the Master of Law in Taxation program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and expects to receive his L.L.M. degree in December. Bret, his wife, Sara Moon-Holder ’99, and son, Jet, live in Kansas City.

Danny L. McCubbin ’96 has been hired as the School Administrator at the new Northern Hills Christian Academy in Holt, Mo. The academy will open this fall serving grades kindergarten through eighth. Danny has served as principal of the Lee’s Summit Christian School for the past five years.

Nate Jewell ’97 graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School in May ’03 and is now doing his residency in Radiology at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Starlin Bowman Jewell ’98 is transferring to the Fred Pryor Seminars office in Dallas as a Training Consultant. She and Nate live in Richardson, Texas.

Matthew “Spanky” Myers ’98 has been deployed to the Middle East. He is a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy.

Adam Burke ’99 has accepted a position with Seaboard Corporation as senior internal auditor. His new position will provide him with a lot of great experience including exposure to international business. He and Beth Bramman Burke ’00 reside in Kansas City.

Kimberly Flowers ’99 is currently working in the Executive Office of the Mayor in Washington, D.C. She is the Manager for Outreach and Communication at Serve DC, where she is responsible for communications, special events, and the monthly Mayor’s Community Service Awards. This will be Kimberly’s third year to lead the national Youth Service Day for the District of Columbia, a weekend engaging nearly 10,000 youth in community service. She is also a board member for Children’s Fund and the YMCA Youth and Government program.

Richard (Rick) Kayser ’99 is a Fabrication Sales Manager for Alberici Constructors. He and his wife, Rachel (who also works for Alberici), reside in St. Louis, Mo.

2000

Nick Bartlow ’00 has been accepted into the 2006 class of the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University. He will begin classes in August in pursuit of his M.B.A. with a concentration in marketing.

Jaime Hamilton ’00 received her master’s degree in public affairs from Park University in December. She is now employed as the national and local copy coordinator for KCTV-5 in Kansas City.

Eric Blair ’01 is the Residence Life Coordinator at Park University. He, Tara, and their two sons reside in Parkville, Mo.

James Everett ’01 has just completed his master’s degree in chemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Laura Smith Everett ’01 is in her second year of teaching second grade at Balboa Elementary School. James and Laura reside in LaJolla, Calif.

Shanna Hilt Hill ’02 has been selected to represent Missouri in the national competition for the title of Mrs. United States. The contest will be held in Las Vegas this summer. Shanna started her career in corporate non-profit devoting her time to Cerner Corporation’s pediatric charity, The First Hand Foundation. She has also been a Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader. Shanna resides in Liberty.

Katie Watts ’02 has been accepted to the master’s of public administration program at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. The Maxwell School’s M.P.A. program ranks number 1 in public administration/public policy programs from U.S. News & World Report. Katie is planning on specializing in social policy and non-profit management. She has been given a graduate assistantship, which means she’ll receive a stipend to do research as well as a scholarship. Since graduating from Jewell, Katie has worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City and also with Americorps VISTA, a national volunteer service agency dedicated to fighting poverty.

Nicole Adams ’03 is serving as vice president and treasurer of the American Humanics National Alumni Association. American Humanics was established in 1948 as a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofits dedicated to educating, preparing and certifying professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations.

Carrie Vanderford ’03 will begin a two-year master’s degree program in city planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in September. She was a 2002 Truman Scholar. Carrie presently resides in Kansas City.
