Harriman Arts patron Barney Karbank dies

Barney Karbank, one of Kansas City's premier industrial and commercial developers and a long-time supporter of William Jewell’s Harriman Arts Program, died January 16 after a long illness. He was 80 years old. Karbank, chairman of B.A. Karbank & Co., developed more than 100 properties in the Kansas City area, mostly warehouses and production plants he rented to other companies.

The son of a fish-market operator, Karbank walked with a cane all his life following a childhood bout with polio. He started out as an unpaid clerk for James B. Welsh Realtyin 1946 before joining Charles F. Curry Co.the following year. He began B.A. Karbank & Co. as a real estate brokerage firm in 1950 at the age of 26. His company now controls more than 5 million square feet of industrial and commercial space in the Kansas City metropolitan area, as well as buildings in other cities. Karbank left his mark on almost every major industrial park in the area. He also assembled a major portion of the land for the Truman Sports Complexand undertook land assemblages for other clients, including sites for the area's first cellular phone system.

A Kansas City native, he attended Paseo High School and Kansas City Junior College. Karbank served on the boards of numerous business and professional organizations, including First Federal Bank, Mercantile BankandLa Petite Academy Inc. He was treasurer for the Committee for County Progressin the 1960s and a member of both the City Plan Commission and the Jackson County Board of Zoning Adjustment.He was a director of many civic and charitable organizations, including the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City, the Jewish Community Foundation, Congregation Beth Shalom and Menorah Medical Center. Karbank received the William F. Yates Medallion for Distinguished Service from William Jewell in 2003.

Karbank is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rose Karbank; their four children and their spouses; his brother Joe Karbank; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Contributions in his memory are being accepted through the Harriman Arts Program of William Jewell College.

1950s

Juarenne Moore Hester ’55 and Myra Lane Unger ’60 recently received the 2004 Missouri Governor’s Humanities Award for “Excellence in Public Involvement” for their two years of work on a book commemorating Liberty’s 175 th Anniversary. Juarenne received the Anne Robb Townsend Tribute to Excellence award for her involvement in numerous civic affairs. Juarenne also received the Modern Woodsmen of America award for her local volunteerism.

Fred and Shirley (Neff) Pryor ’56 have received the John and Marion Kreamer Award for Entrepreneurship in Volunteer Community Service from the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Pryors have long served the Kansas City community, bringing their leadership and energy to such charitable organizations as the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, and the United Way. 1960s

David Bolsenga ’60 recently retired from Southern California Edison. He and his wife, Julie, live in Cambria, Calif.

Bob Phillips ’60 was recently named editor of the Lee’s Summit Post-Tribune, Lee’s Summit, Mo. Bob has been editor of the Raytown (Mo) Post-Tribune for the past eight years and now will assume editorial responsibilities for both newspapers. Bob lives in Lee’s Summit.

Sue Meyer Wright ’66 has two new children’s books in the bookstores. The picture books are published by Scholastic and were adapted at their request from the 1960’s TV series, Davey and Goliath. The first book is The Kite and the second is Blind Man’s Bluff. Other books in the series will be released in the fall. Sue resides in Liberty, Mo.

Martin MacDonald ’67 is the Director of Corporate Public Relations, Conservation and Youth Development at the Bass Pro Shops Headquarters in Springfield, Mo. Martin directs conservation and outdoor skill programs, youth conservation education, corporate giving, government, legislative affairs and public relations efforts.

John Word ’68 was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the providence Speech & Hearing Center of Orange County, Calif. The center is a non-profit agency providing services for hearing disorders for persons of all ages. John is co-founder of a company that markets and distributes health plans to the brokerage community—one of the largest companies of its kind in the nation. John lives in Newport Beach, Calif.

1970s

Joe Palmer ’73 has recently been named the principal of the new elementary school in Liberty, Mo. Joe will complete his ninth year as principal of the Corinth Elementary School in the Shawnee Mission ( Kan.) School District before making the transition to the Liberty School District.

Walter Franz ’74 just returned from 12 months of active duty, including time in Mosul, Iraq and Kurdistan. Walter served as the Battalion Surgeon and Public Health Team Leader for the 416 th Civil Affairs. Their main mission was to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians and assist health professionals in reconstructing the infrastructure of the Iraqi health care system. Walter is now back in Rochester, Minn., where he is Staff Physician, Department of Family Medicine, Mayo Clinic.

Larry Chapman ’75 is retiring at the end of this academic year. He has been in the education field for 31 years, the last 11 years as principal of Southview Elementary School in the Kearney, Mo., School District.

Dennis Hartman ’76 has been named Vice President of the Community Bank of Missouri, Excelsior Springs location. He has been in the banking business for more than 26 years.

Gary Bressman ’77 is retiring at the end of the academic year. He has been the activities director at Truman High School in the Independence, Mo., School District. He has been in the education field for 28 years.

Janette Lohman ’77 , a Partner at Thompson Coburn LLP in St. Louis, has been selected for inclusion in the 2005/2006 Edition of The Best Lawyers in America, published by Woodward/White, Inc. Allen Meyer ’77 has been a school administrator for the past 21 years and has served the last three years as Superintendent of Schools at Galena R-2 School District in Galena, Mo. The Galena schools were recently recognized for the “Distinction In Performance” award by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Allen and his wife, Donna, reside in Shell Knob, Mo.

John Richmond ’77 both presented and moderated the session on “Critical Issues in Music Education” at the Annual Conference of the National Association of Schools of Music in San Diego, Calif. John is a Professor and Director of the School of Music at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

David Zeiler ’78 has been promoted to member (partner) status of the law firm, Lathrop & Gage L. C. David’s practice includes bankruptcies, creditors’ rights and business reorganizations law.

1980s

Carolyn Strother Shaw ’80 has been promoted to Market President of US Bank’s East Central Missouri Market, which includes Bowling Green, Montgomery City and Hannibal, Mo.

Teresa Hensley ’81 has been appointed prosecutor for Cass County, Mo. Teresa and her husband, Kenneth, reside in Raymore, Mo. Their son, Frank, graduated from Jewell in 2004.

Robin Carnahan ’83 was elected Missouri’s Secretary of State in the November general election.

Jim McMechan ’83 has accepted the position of Senior Pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Independence, Mo.

Leslie Burry Mendenhall ’83 is the Director of Transfer and Graduate Recruitment for the Research College of Nursing/Rockhurst University BSN program. She has spent the last 19 years in admission and recruitment at Research and Rockhurst. Leslie, her husband Harry, and three children live in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Scott Burton ’84 has accepted a transfer to the U.S. Probation Office in Springfield, Mo., in conjunction with celebrating his 19 th year of federal law enforcement service. Scott has previously held assignments at the Federal Bureau of Prisons and U.S. Probation offices in Washington, D.C., Nashville, Houston, Tulsa, Kansas City, McAllen and Santa Fe.

Beth Smith ’85 was the recipient of the “Expect the Best” award in the Lee’s Summit, Mo., School District. Beth was nominated by co-workers as a staff member who goes above and beyond their teaching duties. Beth is an elementary librarian/media specialist.

Susan Anderson ’88 recently opened the Midwest Spinal Pain Institute in Kansas City North. Susan received her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1994. The new institute strives to provide pain management and therapy.

Patricia Stuart Jacobs ’89 is now serving as Minister of Congregational Life at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa. She resides in Waterloo with her husband, Bruce, and their daughters, Hannah Grace and Hope Elizabeth.

1990s

Jim Jones ’91 is in his second year as superintendent of the Cole County R-II school district. Jim, his wife, Kelli, and four daughters reside in Jefferson City, Mo.

Shelley Temple Kneuvean ’91 served as Assistant City Administrator for the City of Lee’s Summit, Mo., for ten years. She recently accepted a position with Fannie Mae Kansas City Partnership Office, which works with cities, not for profits, and developers in addressing housing policy and financing critical housing projects in the states of Kansas and Missouri.

Michael Mynatt ’91 recently received his Doctor of Educational Ministry degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Michael is pastor of Norwood Baptist Church. He and his wife, Leslie, and daughters, Haley and Lauren, live in Palestine, Texas.

John Saari ’91 was hired as a Senior Project Manager for Havens Steel Company for the Miami International Airport. The project encompassed 15,000 tons of structural and architectural steel. The project was “topped out” 21 days ahead of schedule. John resides in Kansas City.

Michael Hodges Dermody ’92 has joined Tim Flook ’89 and Kevin Graham ’89 (Flook & Graham, P.C.) as a civil litigation lawyer. The firm is located in Liberty, Mo.

Chad Swenson ’92 is currently working for MTV, working in development for Country Music Television. His wife, Kendall, is a freelance make-up artist. They reside in Santa Monica, Calif.

Matthew Wasson ’92 was recently promoted to International Finance Director of the International Distributor Business Unit of Cummins, Inc., a Fortune 500 company. Matthew lives in Columbus, Ind.

Travis Whitacre ’93 recently accepted a position as a Senior Manager with Alexander Key LLP in Liberty, Mo. Alexander Key is a tax consulting and accounting firm that focuses on the needs of small businesses and their owners.

Mary Lou Burkeybile Meier ’96 was recently promoted to Director of Facility Operations at RehabWorks, a nationwide therapy contract company that provides therapy services to Skilled Nursing Facilities, outpatient clinics and nursing homes. Mary Lou, husband Jason, and children, Zachary and Lexi, reside in St. Joseph, Mo.

Amy Rader ’96 has received a second bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. She is a speech-language pathologist at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, Mo., specializing in traumatic brain injury.

Catesby Major ’97 recently received her J. D. and a master of social work degree from the University of Kansas. She has joined the international law firm of Bryan Cave. Catesby is a member of the Labor & Employment and Commercial Litigation Client Service Groups. She resides in Kansas City, Mo.

Randy Oliver ’97 has completed all the coursework, including the written and oral comps, toward a doctorate degree in educational administration at the University of Kansas. Randy has accepted the position of principal of Atchison High School in Atchison, Kan. Randy, Becky Smith Oliver ’96, and their two daughters reside in Atchison.

Rachel Beckett ’98 has recently accepted the position as Director of Youth Services at the Whatsoever Community Center in the Northeast section of Kansas City.

Matthew Myers ’98 was recently promoted to Lieutenant in the United States Navy and is currently serving in the Middle East.

Jonathon Rhoad ’98 received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Ohio State University. Jonathon conducted research in the laboratories of Dr. Claudia Turro and defended his dissertation, “DNA-Binding Carbohydrates for Coordination to a Photoactive Dirhodium Complex and Molecular Dynamics Studies of Methylfuranosides: Evaluation of Available Force Fields.”

Susan Conroy ’99 has accepted a position as Public Relations Account Executive with Osborn & Barr Communications in their Kansas City office.

Linda Johnson ’99 has completed her master of science degree at Central Missouri State University and is currently conducting environmental research at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Chris Rager ’99 has been promoted to Assistant Buyer, Men’s Knit Tops for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in Bentonville, Ark. Chris and his wife, Karla, reside in Centerton, Ark.

Stephanie Singer-Koebel ’99 is teaching private German lessons and doing some translation work while being a stay-at-home mom. Next year, she plans to home school her daughter in English and German. Stephanie, her husband (whom she met while studying in Berlin) and daughter reside in Pleasant Valley, Mo.

Brian Slaughter ’99 has defended his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at K.U. and has accepted a post-doctoral position at the Stowers Institute in Kansas City, Mo.

2000’s

Marla Powell Clark ’00 is now living in Germany. Her husband, William Clark, is in the Air Force, and his assignment calls for them to live in Germany for the next three years. Marla is pursuing her master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis in social work.

Courtney Nichols ’00 has been named the Executive Director of the STAR (Supporting Those At Risk) Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that helps people who may be genetically predisposed to developing cancer. The foundation focuses on education, access to genetic counseling and testing, peer support, research and advocacy. Courtney resides in Independence, Mo.

Cindy Critten O’Rourke ’00 graduated from BMSI Institute in Overland Park, Kan. as a massage therapist, and she and her husband have formed the O’Rourke Wellness Center in Gallatin, Mo.

Kristen Vibbert ’00 has accepted a position as editor with ZweigWhite, a consulting firm in Washington D.C. Kristen resides in McLean, Va.

Laura Sayers ’01 was nominated for the 2004 Heart of Healthcare Award, which is sponsored annually by the University of Kansas School of Nursing. The award banquet was held at the Westin Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City as a celebration of the nursing profession. Laura is an Emergency Room nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City.

Meghan Sharp ’01 now manages a national school safety initiative administered by the National Crime Prevention Council (home of McGruff the Crime Dog). Meghan resides in Arlington, Va.

Dan Stevenson ’01 has recently accepted a position as Operations Leader for Cerner Asia-Pacific. This new position required him to relocate to the company’s Pacific Rim office in Sydney, Australia. He will be working there for the next nine to twelve months.

Aaron Hubbell ’02 has been promoted to Sales Coordinator with Courtesy Products in St. Louis, Mo. He resides in Wildwood, Mo.

Evan Young ’02 just completed flight school and was designated a Naval Aviator. He was accepted into Officer Candidate School during his senior year at Jewell. Evan will be flying the Sea Dragon helicopter , and will be stationed in Norfolk, Vir., for six months before heading to Sigonella, Italy (on the island of Sicily) for the next three years.

Nehley Goodwin ’03 has accepted a position as marketing assistant for Clay County Savings Bank in Liberty, Mo. She also received the “Volunteer of the Year” award from the Liberty Chamber of Commerce for the work she did at the Liberty Fall Festival.

Kristin Leitze ’03 received her master’s degree in accounting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and is working as an auditor in the assurance department at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Kansas City.

Heather Todd ’04 teaches general music classes at the Mountain Grove Middle School and directs choirs at the Middle School and High School. She is also the Choir Director at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Heather lives in Mountain Grove, Mo.
