1940s
John Edmund ’40 and Elizabeth
George Edmund observed their 60th wedding anniversary
on November 21, 2003. John and Elizabeth met in
a first-year French class at Jewell. John was
a Phi Gamma Delta and washed dishes and waited
tables in the New Ely Hall. John went on to Officer
Candidate School and after the war was accepted
at the Dental School of the University of Kansas
City. He retired in 1980 after 30 years of dental
service. He also retired as a full colonel in
the Dental Corps Reserve. Elizabeth was a Zeta
Tau Alpha the two years she attended Jewell, having
the lead in the production of “Our Town.”
She graduated from MU with an education degree.
John & Elizabeth have three daughters and
seven grandchildren. They reside in Topeka, Kan.
Juanita Carpenter Bedard ’43
was honored by the South Providence (R.I.) Neighborhood
Ministries for teaching weekly adult and youth
sewing classes. For twelve years she came to this
low-income neighborhood every Friday morning to
help multi-ethnic adults make clothing and other
items and learn practical skills and self-sufficiency.
Family commitments have prompted Juanita to retire
from her post as coordinator of the sewing program.
She & Camille Bedard ’43 reside in Greenville,
R.I.
Jean Osborn ’43 and Nellie
Coats Osborn ’45 were pictured
in the Newsletter – LifeCare Ministries
for Missouri Baptists. Jean and Nellie were taking
their daily walk on the campus. They are residents
of the Independent Living Apartments in Chillicothe.
Bill Riggs ’47 and Mary
Lou Riggs Palmer ’54 were pictured
in the Newsletter – LifeCare Ministries
for Missouri Baptists. Bill and Mary Lou were
visiting The Baptist Home in Ironton, Mo., which
was founded by their grandparents.
1950s
Disca Ann McKown Kovar ’54
was recently inducted into the Research Alumna
Hall of Fame. Disca worked at Research, North
Kansas City and Liberty Hospitals before retiring
as a nursing supervisor in 1995.
Edgar L. Chapman ’57 has
edited the Edwin Mellen Press publication entitled
“Classic and Iconclastic Alternate History
Science Fiction.” Edgar is Professor of
English Emeritus at Bradley University and lives
in East Peoria, Ill.
Charles Blaylock ’58 and
Janet Lukens Blaylock ’58
are both part-time chaplains with the MarketPlace
Ministries – the only couple serving in
this capacity. Charles is also serving with the
International Interim Ministry of the Center for
Congregational Health. Charles & Jan live
in Tyler, Texas.
Warren “Bud” Lathrop ’58
won his 900th high school game as coach
of the Raytown South basketball team. He and his
wife, Gay, live in Raytown, Mo.
Vernon Mallow ’58 has
recently completed two novels – Spirit’s
Shadow and Magdalene. These books have been published
through the AmErica House in Baltimore, Md. They

1960s
Stuart Bascomb ’63 is
Executive Vice President and Director of Express
Scripts, which was selected by Fortune Magazine
for “Best Overall Performance by a Company”
for the last ten years among the Fortune 500 Companies.
Stuart and Phyllis Linck Bascomb ’64
live in Town & County, Mo.
Robert Taylor ’69, who
has been Superintendent of Schools for Festus
(Mo.) R-6 School District for the past fourteen
years, was nominated by the Missouri Association
of School Administrators as a regional finalist
for the Pearce Award in 2003. This award is given
to one top school superintendent in the state.
Robert and Susan Kinder Taylor ’70 live
in Festus, Mo. They have three daughters –
Jennifer, who graduated from WJC in ’96;
Jamie, a graduate in ’00 and Kate, who will
graduate in ’04.
1970s
Julia Moore Bodenhamer ’73
was unable to attend her 30th Class Reunion during
Homecoming Weekend, as she was in Tokyo having
been selected as one of 200 Fulbright Memorial
Fund Teachers participating in a 3- week cultural
program.
Stephen Hemphill ’78 has
been deployed to Kuwait City. He will be the Senior
Legal Advisor for the Coalition Provisional Authority.
Mary Jane Heaton ’79 has
been promoted to Software Designer at Communications
Data Group in Champaign, Ill. She completed an
Associate of Applied Science degree in AS/400
Computer Programming at Kirkwood Community College,
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and has worked as a Programmer
at CDG since that time.
1980s
David Anderson ’80 has
freelanced for the last ten years as a book and
technical journal editor, recently specializing
in musical semiotics and philosophy. He also reviews
books on cosmology, genetics and the history of
science for Publishers Weekly. He has one book
ready to submit to publishers (See More Seymour),
which he describes as a satirical look at small
town life. Last fall David was involved in politics
for the first time – writing speeches and
ads for a mayoral candidate (who won). David resides
in Seymour, Ind.
Jeffrey Hon ’86 has accepted
the position as Minister of Music and Christian
Education at Park Hill Christian Church, Kansas
City. He and his wife, Sarah Hassanein Hon ’88,
and their two children reside in Liberty, Mo.
Sandra Stonebraker Thomas ’88 was
recently named the “Outstanding CPA in Government”
by the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants.
She has served her community as the Platte County
Auditor since 1994. Sandra is married to James
Thomas ’87.
Robert Ross ’89 is now
a detective with the Fort Worth, Texas, Police
Department, where he has worked for the past eight
years. He and his wife, Lisa, and their children,
Aerin and Robert, reside in Fort Worth.
1990s
David Jurcak ’90 was
named General Manager of the Omni Colonnade Hotel
in Coral Gables, Fla. David, his wife, Kerry,
and son, Kaige, live in Coral Gables, and are
looking forward to their daughter’s birth
in April.
Kristin Vaughn ’90 was
elected vice president for finance of the National
Association for College Admission Counseling at
the group’s 59th National Conference in
Long Beach, Calif. Kristin is the assistant director
of admission and college counselor at Holland
Hall School in Tulsa, Okla. She currently serves
on the William Jewell College Board of Governors
and on the Board of Directors for the Junior League
of Tulsa, Okla.
Daniel Belcher ’92 recently
moved to Liberty, Mo. He is currently performing
opera in Toronto and has upcoming performances
in Seoul, Korea; Philadelphia; Houston; and the
world premiere of “Angels in America”
in Paris. He will be performing in “La Cenerentola”
with the Lyric Opera in Kansas City during the
Fall of 2004.
Kristin Rasmussen Sumlar ’92
is CEO of Sumlar Therapy Services, a pediatric,
physical and occupation and speech therapy company
for children with disabilities located in Ozark,

Allison Mackey Stewart ’92
has been selected as an official “Partner
in Education” with the John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts for the 2003-04 fiscal
year. This fall, Allison completed several workshops
and training sessions at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C. The partnership will enable her
to implement educational workshops for area teachers
in northwest Missouri and teach local educators
how to integrate arts in their curriculum. Allison
is currently the Executive Director for the St.
Joseph (Mo.) Symphony Orchestra. Allison, her
husband, Todd, and son, Carson, live in St. Joseph.
James Catalano ’93 has
been named a partner in the law firm of Leitner,
Williams, Dooley & Napolitan, PLLC. Mr. Catalano
practices litigation in the Nashville, Tenn.,
office. Tracey Sterbenz Mulholland ’94 has
earned her National Board Certification for elementary
and secondary education. Tracey teaches mathematics
at Fort Osage (Mo.) High School.
James Murray III ’95
is the Associate Conductor of the Liberty Symphony
and Conductor of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.
Jim was recently selected to conduct the St. Louis
All- Suburban High School Orchestra at Lindbergh
High School. This is an honors orchestra composed
of the finest high school players in the St. Louis
area. Jim is a graduate of Lindbergh High School,
so this was a special honor for him.
Brock J. Doubledee ’96
graduated from medical school in 2000; completed
his residency in Pediatrics at the University
of Kansas Medical Center; and is now the Pediatric
Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Transplant Fellow
at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Brock, his wife Denise, and daughter, Katherine,
live in Gretna, Neb.
Brian Ford ’96 has been
called as the minister of Little Bonne Femme Baptist
Church in Columbia, Mo. This church has a rich
185-year history, including members such as Dr.
William Jewell and Robert Thomas (Jewell’s
first president).
Sasha Scholville Shillcutt ’97
graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from the
University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is
now in anesthesiology residency. Sasha, her husband,
Lance, and son, Samuel, live in Omaha, Neb.
Joshua Haynes ’98 is
the Special Projects Manager for U. S. Representative
Jo Ann Emerson of Southeast Mo.
Heather Falk Haynes ’99
is a graduate assistant in the History Department
at Southeast Missouri State University and is
continuing her work toward her master’s
degree. Joshua and Heather live in Cape Girardeau,
Mo.
Kara Coleman Bruning ’99
received her M.D. from the University of Nebraska
Medical Center in May 2003, and is currently completing
a pediatric residency at Raymond Blank Children’s
Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
John F. Piper ’99 recently
accepted the position of Chef de Cuisine at the
Cucina, an upscale Italian restaurant located
in the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center in
Atlantic City. John received a degree in Culinary
Arts from the Culinary Institute of America in
Hyde Park, N.Y., and has worked in five-star restaurants
in Philadelphia and Napa Valley, Calif. John is
currently living in Sparta, N. J.
2000s
Julie Merritt ’00 is a
resident chaplain at Baylor University while pursuing
her Master’s of Divinity at Truett Theological
Seminary. Julie resides in Waco, Tex.
Meredith Hopper Murphy ’00 recently
completed her Master’s Degree in Counseling
from the University of Illinois – Springfield
and is employed as a Child Therapist at Prairie
Center Against Sexual Assault.
Johnathan Murphy ’00 began
a new position as Mandatory Buyer for Wells Fargo.
This fall, they moved into their new home in Springfield,
Ill.Natalie Nimmer ’00
is the Vice Principal of the Northern Islands
High School (Ministry of Education) in Majuro,
MH, Republic of the Marshall Islands where she
often enjoyed meeting older alums
when they visited the college. While visiting
her grandmother recently in a Charlottesville
retirement complex, she encountered a man who
was very interested in the Jewell license plate
holder on her car. “It turned out he was Bob Morf,
a graduate of the class of 1939,” Nan reports.
“We chatted for a short time and he has fond memories
of his days on The Hill. He’d had some of the
“greats,” P. Caspar Harvey and others. It was
a nice visit!”
Heidi Haynes Hargraves ’01
teaches fifth grade at Boyd Elementary School
in Springfield, Mo. Heidi and her husband, Damon,
live in Springfield while Damon completes his
Master’s in Educational Technology from Drury
University.
Katie Teece ’01 has been named
the Woman’s Director for K-Life in Nashville,
Tenn. K-Life is an interdenominational Christian
ministry of discipleship and fellowship for youth.
K-Life works alongside churches and families in
the community to teach and encourage kids to be
strong in the Lord in spite of all the negative
pressures they face as teenagers.
Chris Homiak ’03 and Katie
Brennan Homiak ’02 are both attending
George Truett Seminary and the School of Social
Work grad school at Baylor University. They now
reside in Waco, Tex.
Katie Young ’03 is a Teach
for America Corps member in Houston, Texas. She
teaches “English as a Second Language” to 8th
graders and also Language Arts. Katie now resides
in Houston.
