1940s
Dr. Richard P. Bowles ’49
was honored recently by the Liberty School District
with its “Honoring Our Own” award.
A lifetime resident of Liberty, Dr. Bowles graduated
from Liberty High School in 1945. He has practiced
medicine at Liberty and North Kansas City hospitals
and in his own private practice. He served Jewell
for many years as a team physician and trustee,
and is a past recipient of the college’s
Citation for Achievement.
1950s
Bud Lathrop ’58 was named
All-Metro boy’s basketball Coach of the
Year by The Kansas City Star. Lathrop finished
the season with a record of 26-5 and led his Raytown
South High School team to the Missouri Class 5
state championship game, where the team lost to
Springfield Kickapoo. Lathrop is a past recipient
of Jewell’s Citation for Achievement.
1960s
Larry F. Matthews ’65
is the newly appointed director of The College
Board’s Midwestern regional office in Evanston,
Ill. The office serves thirteen states. He and
his wife, Suzanne, live in Glenview, Ill.
1970s
Howard Chrisman Jones ’73
was honored recently by the Liberty School District
with its “Honoring Our Own” award.
Jones graduated from Liberty High School in 1969
and is a set designer and teacher whose work has
appeared at Starlight Theater, Missouri Repertory
Theatre and the American Heartland Theater. He
is a past recipient of Jewell’s Citation
for Achievement.
John W. Richmond ’77 has been published
in such journals as the Journal of Research in
Music Education, Research Perspectives in Music
Education, Arts Education Policy Review, the International
Journal of Music Education, The Journal of Aesthetic
Education and the Choral Journal, as well as a
number of research monographs, including “On
the Nature of the Musical Experience.” He
is a founding director of the Suncoast Music Education
Forum, the founding editor of the Florida Choral
News, and served as the conference director for
the 1994 World Conference of the International
Society for Music Education, the music education
arm of the United Nations Education, Scientific
and Cultural Organization. Richmond recently completed
the editing of the “Policy and Philosophy
Research Section” of the upcoming second
edition of the Handbook of Research in Music Teaching
and Learning and also wrote the chapter on “Law
Research and Music Education.” Richmond
and his wife, Jill, live in Tampa, Fla.
1980s
Paul Bruce ’80 has been
promoted to Senior Vice President-Financial Operations
and Chief Financial Officer at Farm Credit Services
of Mid-America, headquartered in Louisville, Ky.
He lives in Louisville with his wife, Kerry, and
their three children.
Connie Dover ’84 recently performed
as guest vocalist on a Kansas City Chamber Orchestra
program arranged by Bruce Sorrell ’83.
The program focused on Celtic music and had a
spring seasonal theme. Kansas City Star music
critic Paul Horsley praised Dover’s “auburn-colored
voice and clean renditions.”
Israel Obieje ’89 is the
director of the Global Missions Board of the Nigerian
Baptist Convention. He and his wife, Christiana,
live in Ibadan with their son, Israel, Jr.
1990s
David Ingle ’93 will
complete a Musculoskeletal and Trauma Imaging
Fellowship in the Department of Radiology at the
Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center and University
of Tennessee at Memphis in June. He served as
Chief Resident in the department in 2001-02, completing
his residency in Diagnostic Radiology in June
2002. He recently had an article published in
the January 2003 issue of the Orthopedics journal.
David and his wife, Tracy, live in Memphis with
their two children, Olivia and Matthew.
Andrew Sallee ’99 was
selected recently as the monthly “Honoring
Excellence” winner by the Liberty School
District. The award was based on Andrew’s
three years of volunteer work as a “YouthFriend”
for a Liberty Academy student, an alternative
educational program within the district. “Andrew’s
personal endeavors and commitment to this program
have made a tremendous difference in the life
of one particular student,” said district
spokesman Jim Dunn. “It is particularly
rewarding to recognize positive change and academic
success as a direct result of Andrew’s mentoring.
The student, his parents and the Liberty School
District award this distinction to Andrew Sallee

Evan T. Young ’02 recently
received his commission as a naval officer after
completing Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Naval
Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola,
Fla.
