Cardinal Connection

When taking a walk, do you keep your head up and look around you, or direct your eyes toward the ground? Keeping his eyes on the ground resulted in a “Jewell” of a find recently for St. Louis resident Matthew Conlon.

A few years ago, Conlon worked in the city of St. Louis, and used to take walks during his lunch hour, sometimes around Barnes Hospital. During one of his strolls, he saw something glistening in the sun. Stooping to pull the item from the dirt, he unearthed a William Jewell College Department of Nursing pin. The initials on the back read “S.L.K.” and the year “’83”.

Matthew put the pin in a dresser drawer, then forgot about it. Rediscovering the pin recently, he thought he might be able to locate its owner. He contacted the William Jewell College Alumni Office for assistance. An inquiry to the WJC Nursing Department for a nursing graduate from 1983 matching the initials “S.L.K.” yielded a perfect match – Susan L. Sanders, whose name was Susan Koch while a nursing student at Jewell.

When contacted about the pin, Susan, now living in Georgia, said she had worked at Barnes Hospital in 1983 and had lost the pin that year. Susan and her nursing pin were recently reunited. Thanks to Matthew Conlon of Ballwin, Mo., for striking gold and helping us make a Cardinal Connection!

Back to The Hill

Alumnae representatives of Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta and Zeta Tau Alpha gathered at Semple Hall and Semple Wing to relive their college days during a Sorority Slumber Party on July 9. More than 50 women from several decades returned for the event, with class years represented from 1964 to 2001. The evening kicked off with a barbeque on the Semple Hall back deck, followed by an ice cream social. Gathering in chapter rooms and in Semple Lounge to look over Tatler yearbooks and reminisce about college activities and events such as Tatler Revue and Homecoming, the ladies caught up with friends and classmates. Twenty women elected to spend the night in their old rooms in their respective sorority wings and commented that the biggest change (and improvement) was the addition of air conditioning in the residence hall. Even those women not choosing to spend the night stayed into the wee hours socializing. The ladies staying into Sunday morning enjoyed a continental breakfast and campus tour before returning home. Beth Poore Finch '76, who also participated in the Melrose Slumber Party last summer, commented that she is awaiting the notice from the Alumni Office of the date and residence hall location for next summer's slumber party, as it is becoming a traditional vacation stop.

Jewell alums say goodbye to Busch Stadium

William Jewell College alumni from the St. Louis area gathered September 8 for William Jewell Night at Busch Stadium. Only 12 games remained to be played in the venerable downtown stadium, which will be replaced by a new facility next year. All fans received miniature replicas of Busch Stadium.

The Jewell group enjoyed a pre-game picnic in a special outfield section called “Homer’s Landing.” The group then watched the Cardinals beat the New York Mets 5-0 on the strength of two home runs by Kansas City native Albert Pujols. A good time was had by all, and many folks asked about the possibility of doing it again in the new stadium next spring.

President David Sallee and John Truex ’47 enjoy William Jewell night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Nikki Vellinga ’02, Karen Wynkoop ’99 and Katie Lauck Power ’01 were on hand for the alumni baseball outing.

Here’s how you can help! We’d like to hear from the WJC alumni who can assist us in the event planning. Where is the “hot spot” in your city that would be a convenient location to hold a luncheon, reception or dinner? Are you available to call other alumni to encourage attendance? Can you host an event in your home or put us in touch with a contact at your apartment/condo, country club or golf course clubhouse? Want us to come visit you? Let us know! Contact the alumni office at 816-415-7565 or at honj@william.jewell.edu. Also, please check with the alumni office to ensure your contact information is current so that you receive an invitation to the events in your area.
