ALUMNI EVENTS

Alumni from Colorado and Wyoming met in Denver on June 11 for an area alumni dinner. Prospective students from the area also attended and gathered with alumni and friends of the college

A reception was held in Washington , D.C. on June 22 for alumni and friends of WJC.

A spring brunch was held in the President's Home for a group of Kansas City area Jewell alumnae from the mid-70s. Guests renewed acquaintances with former classmates and learned of upcoming Jewell events. Similar events for alumnae of other decades are being planned. A gift in Deborah's memory was made to the Spirit Team and the Education Department at William Jewell. Deborah is the daughter of Gary McElwain '68 and Kathy McCarty McElwain '69 .

Froncie Hill Joy '26 celebrated her 100 th birthday this spring at Pleasant Valley Manor Care Center in Liberty , Mo. Family and friends joined with her to celebrate this special occasion.

1940s

Edith Payne Smith '49 won the recent poetry contest sponsored by the Liberty Tribune and the Corbin Theatre Company in Liberty , Mo. Her humorous entry was entitled “The Soloist.”

1950s

Paul Eppinger '55 was recently honored with a celebration of the 50 th anniversary of his ordination to the ministry by the American Baptist Churches. The governor of Arizona , the Honorable Janet Napolitano, was in attendance to give the proclamation commemorating the event. Paul & Sybil reside in Phoenix , Ariz.

John Hendrix '58 has written a new book entitled “Nothing Never Happens: Experiential Learning and the Church.” This book is available in local bookstores or directly from Smyth & Helwys Publishing Company. John retired after many years of seminary teaching and is pastor emeritus of Northside Baptist Church , Clinton , Miss.

Leroy Seat '59 and June Tinsley Seat '59 have just finished 38 years of mission work in Fukuoka City, Japan, where Leroy has taught for 36 years and has served as chancellor for eight years. June has been active in parent education and introduced the Active Parenting program to Japan . They will reside at 2206 West Auburn Street , Bolivar , Mo. 65613 for the next year.

1960s

Gene E. Voigts '61 recently received the 2004 Deans of the Trial Bar Award at the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association's Bench-Bar Conference. This award is presented annually and spotlights individuals whose superb litigation skills and professional demeanor are viewed as exemplary by their peers. Recipients of the honor must have practiced for at least 30 years or have reached the age of 60. Gene has been a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. in Kansas City since 1976.

The late Charles A. Richard '63 was one of three coaches and six players recently selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend , Ind. Charlie died in 1994 while meeting with his coaching staff at Baker University in Baldwin City , Kan. Dan Lambert '63 , President of Baker University, said, “Charlie Richard was exceptionally bright and while we were outplayed in some games, we were never out-coached. He inspired in his players a strong sense of discipline not only in athletics, but perhaps more so in their personal lives.”

Larry Kirk '65 is a professor of chemistry at California State University in Chico . His wife, Maureen, is the mayor of the City of Chico .

Bev Thompson Vogt '66 was recently named “Teacher of the Year” by the Park Hill School District in Kansas City North. Bev has taught first grade for the past 24 years in the Park Hill District and is President of the Park Hill National Education Association. She's spent the past twelve summers traveling throughout the United States as a math consultant. Bev and Michael are parents of three grown children and reside in Parkville , Mo.

Tom Digby '67 had an article entitled “Male Trouble: Are Men Victims of Sexism?” published in the June 2003 edition of the philosophy journal, Social Theory and Practice . It was part of a symposium on the subject of sexism against men featuring Tom and four other philosophers. He was also re-elected to the Executive Board of the Society for the Study of Women Philosophers, and he serves on the editorial board of the interdisciplinary journal, “Men and Masculinities.” Tom is a professor of philosophy at Springfield College in Springfield , Mass.

Dan Elliott '67 was presented the Exemplary Teacher Award during the Honors Convocation at Central Methodist College in Fayette , Mo. This award from the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry recognizes excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to values-centered education and service to the institution, community or church.

Linda French '69 has been elected to the board of directors of SCS Transportation. SCS is a Kansas City-based trucking company with operations nationwide. Linda will serve a one-year term.

1970s

Jim Dunn '71 has been elected President of the National School Public Relations Association, taking office in July. Jim is the Public Relations Specialist for the Liberty School District . Jim and Kathy Moore Dunn '73 reside in Liberty , Mo.

Richard L. Miller '71 is mentioned in a recent issue of The New Yorker magazine. He found a poem strongly suspected to have been written by Abraham Lincoln and published in 1838. In the poem the speaker employs vivid imagery in contemplating suicide. Richard is the author of a biography about Harry Truman and is working on one about Abraham Lincoln. He lives in Kansas City , Mo.

Mary Dell Black Hill '73 retired from the Fort Osage School District after 28 years of service. She retired as Director of Student Support Services. In 2002, she was awarded the “Distinguished Service Award” by the Missouri Council of Administrators of Special Education. Mary Dell now works part-time as an administrator for the Eldon, Mo. , school district and also works part-time supervising student teachers for Columbia College . She and her husband, Rick Hill, reside in Gravois Mills , Mo.

Michelle Hurst Pell '73 was recently selected for the third consecutive time to Who's Who Among America 's Teachers and to “Outstanding Educators of the 21 st Century,” published in Cambridge , England . Michelle just finished her 15 th year overseas as a teacher for the Department of Defense and her 11 th year at Seoul American High School , Yongsan Garrison, Seoul , Republic of Korea . She also became a grandmother in February.

Jerry Schierding '76 was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Midwest BankCentre-St. Charles. Founded in 1906, locally owned Midwest BankCentre operates eight banks in the St. Louis area. Jerry is the second generation leader of Grau Contracting, founded in 1949, and located in St. Charles , Mo. Jerry and Diane live in Wentzville , Mo.

Linda Fuller Greason '78 was recently named Principal of the Gashland Elementary School in the North Kansas City School District . She also received the “Staff Developer of the Year' award during the spring. This award is given to an individual whose contributions to staff development activities support the goals and focus of the district as well as individual teachers and schools. Linda, husband Greg Greason '78 , and sons , Zach '04 and Brandon, live near Liberty , Mo.

Michael Willett Newheart '78 has published his third book, My Name Is Legion: The Story and Soul of the Gerasene Demoniac with The Liturgical Press. Michael is Associate Professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Howard University School of Divinity. Michael, his wife, Joy, and their children, Anastasia and Miranda, reside in Berwyn Heights , Md. When Michael and Joy married, they changed their last name to Newheart from Ezekiel 36:26.

Rachel Gifford '79 has founded a company called DM Strategies, Inc. Rachel helped educate medical professionals and the pharmaceutical industry about diabetes and how to communicate with and educate diabetes patients. Rachel lives in Mission Hills , Kan.

Graham Houston '79 was a spring participant in the annual Bicycle Commuter Challenge. Graham rode 22.5 miles, each way, from his home in Kansas City North to his job at Research Medical Center . This is Graham's second year to be a part of this program. Graham is a believer in alternative methods of transportation and hopes the event will inform people about those options. The benefits of biking are twofold, he says. The first is a benefit to the environment by not driving. The second is a health benefit.

Thomas Kirkendall '79 was promoted to Lt. Col. and is currently the Chief, Air Operations for Air Force Reserve Command. He and his family reside in Warner Robins , Ga.

Doretta Todd '79 has been named Director of Nursing at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston , Mo.

1980s

Jeff Buscher '81 has been named Campus Minister and Coordinator of Student Ministries and Community Service at William Jewell College . Jeff, his wife, Kayle, and their two children, James and Kenna, are relocating to Liberty from Wyoming .

Deryl Goettling '81 has been promoted to Senior Vice President at the Liberty Branch of National Bank of Kansas City . Deryl had previously served as Vice President of Construction Lending. He is a resident of Liberty , Mo.

Steve Lindsay '81 has left the retail sales and management area and has gone to work for the Jewish Vocational Service. He teaches disabled persons how to job search and how to retain a job for the long term. Steve continues to direct the handbell choirs at North Cross United Methodist Church . Steve, Peggy and their two children reside in Gladstone , Mo.

Robin Carnahan '83 has been appointed to the Board of Advisors of the Federal Election Assistance Commission. The commission was established under the Help America Vote Act to serve as a national clearinghouse for the compilation of information and to review procedures with respect to the administration of Federal elections. Robin resides in St. Louis , Mo.

Charles “Chuck” Foley '83 has recently accepted the position of President of Tacit Networks, the leader in Wide Area File Services (WAFS), a technology segment in the storage/networking sector. Chuck and his wife, Cherie, reside in Medford , N.J.

Tom Boyer '84 has been elected to the Board of Governors of HealthONE, LLC. With seven hospitals and more than 9,000 employees, HealthONE is the largest health care provider in the Denver Metro area and the fifth-largest private sector employer in Colorado . In addition to his duties on the board, Tom has been selected to chair the Ethics and Human Values Committee of the corporation. Professionally, Tom is the President of Princeton Associates, a national executive search firm he founded in 1990. Tom, his wife Maureen, and daughters Abby and Georgia, reside in the Denver area.

Craig Kingsley '84 is the National Coordinator for English Education at Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Company. Craig resides in Hamamatsu City , Shizuoka Prefecture , Japan .

Phillip “Kreg” Mallow '84 has completed his thirteenth year as a missionary to Cambodia , beginning with the First World Concern International and serving more recently with the Overseas Missionary Fellowship. Kreg also teaches at the Phnom Penh Bible School . He and his wife Jennifer, and their two sons reside in Phnom Penh , Cambodia .

Bill Prather '84 has been named Alumni Relations and Grants Director at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City , Kan. This is a newly formed position to work with alumni and friends of the seminary to increase development capacity by generating new names and new donors, as well as working to increase gift revenue through grants. Bill is currently serving as pastor for Bethel Baptist Church in Kansas City , Mo. Bill, Priscilla and their family reside in Liberty , Mo.

Kevin Gibson '87 recently earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard , Ill. He is currently serving as the Minister of Music/Senior Adults for First Baptist Church of North Kansas City, Mo.

Steven Carder '88 has opened a new medical practice in family medicine. It is called “The Family Doctor's Office” and is located in Liberty , Mo.

Christine Hymes Krug '88 is an Assistant Circuit Attorney for the City of St. Louis and prosecutes sex crimes and crimes against children. She is also the Director of Interns and Recruiting. Christine, her husband, Bryce, and their two daughters reside in St. Louis , Mo.

Daniel McCarroll '88 is the Director of Continuing Legal Education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School. He is also the Worship Leader and Assistant Drama Director at Church on the Rock Outreach Center , Lee's Summit , Mo. Daniel, his wife, Tara, and their three children reside in Lee's Summit , Mo.

Julie East Tootle '88 has been named Director of Patient Services for Ellett Memorial Hospital in Appleton City , Mo. Julie has 16 years of nursing experience and six years of managerial experience. She resides in Clinton , Mo.

Kurt Pycior '89 is President of Froehlich Pycior Company, which was recently named the “Small Business of the Year” by the city of Lee's Summit , Mo. FPC builds approximately 50 new homes a year, ranging in price from $220,000 to $500,000, and is branching out into commercial development. Kurt resides in Lee's Summit , Mo.

1990s

Michael Humphrey '91 wrote a story entitled “It Don't Stop,” which will be published in an upcoming short story collection entitled “Original Sin: The Seven Deadlies Come Home to Roost.” His submission took first prize in the contest. Michael, a regular contributor to The Kansas City Star Magazine, was chosen from among hundreds of other entries for this collection. “Original Sin” is scheduled for release in the fall.

Shana Wilkinson Marsh '92 has recently been promoted to Chief Financial Officer for the Kansas City Health Department. Shana, Todd and their two children reside in Kansas City North.

Catherine “Jean” Terry Cullen '93 was named the mission involvement specialist for the national Woman's Missionary Union. Her responsibilities include four WMU ministries: Christian Women's Job Corps (a ministry that focuses on basic life skills, weekly Bible study and mentoring); International Initiatives (a ministry seeking to positively impact issues related to women, such as poverty, sex trafficking and health care); and Project HELP and Pure Water, Pure Love (a ministry providing water filters to international missionaries). Jean is a certified social worker in Alabama . Jean and her husband Lon Cullen '91 and family live in Vincent , Ala.

Michael Carper '94 has accepted a post-doctoral position at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge , La. Opened in 1988, the Pennington Center houses 14 research laboratories, 17 core service laboratories, inpatient and outpatient clinics, a research kitchen, an administrative area and more than $20 million in technologically advanced equipment. Charlie Alexander '96 is Vice President of Marketing for Pauls Corporation. Katie Bowman Alexander '95 is a CPA with Bondi & Company, LLP. They reside in Highlands Ranch, Colo. , with their two children, Paige and Jackson.

Aaron Best '96 has accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Hope College . Aaron, Kelli Lutes Best '96, and their two children now reside in Holland , Mich.

Jennifer Taylor '96 has recently been promoted to Sales Executive with the Simmons Manufacturing Plant of San Leandro, Calif. The territory promotion has required her to move from the San Francisco area to Visalia , Calif.

Richard Adams '97 received his master's degree in clinical psychology. He will begin his doctoral internship in clinical psychology this fall at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Mo. Richard, Julie and their children reside in Springfield , Mo.

Chad Cooper '97 graduated with a Master of Divinity, Summa Cum Laude, from Central Baptist Theological Seminary.  He was awarded the Franklin Lorenzo Streeter Award for Excellence in Biblical Interpretation.  During his course of study at CBTS, Chad was a Presidential Scholar.  Chad has recently been hired as the Associate Pastor of Student Ministries and Discipleship at Swope Park Baptist Church , Kansas City, Mo.   Chad 's wife, Kristin Ferguson Cooper '97 , is the Secretary to the Dean of the Chapel at William Jewell and is pursuing a major in biology. Chad and Kristin reside in Liberty , Mo.

Loren Cunningham '98 is a Senior Partner for the Abacus Search Group, a placement firm specializing in professional job placement. His wife, Jamie, is a doctoral student at the University of Kansas , majoring in molecular and cellular biology. They reside in Lawrence , Kan.

Christy Link Seele '98 was recently named the Marketing/Program Coordinator for the Economic Development Division of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, Manhattan , Kan. Christy and her husband, Karl, live in Belvue , Kan.

Adam Burke '99 has recently rejoined Ferrellgas as the Manager of Treasury and Corporate Finance. Ferrellgas, a Fortune 1000 company, is the nation's second largest retail propane marketer. He and Beth Bramman Burke '00 reside in Kansas City .

Laura Hamilton Lucas '99 recently completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry with honors at the University of Kansas . She is currently working as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at KU.

Andrea Whiteley '99 has been promoted to Manager of Marketing Research with Silver Dollar City, Inc. in Branson , Mo.

Wayne Williams '00 is a captain in the U. S. Army and serves as a JAG attorney at Fort Bragg . He has recently taken over the environmental law position. Wayne and Amy Davidson Williams '00 reside in Fayetteville , N. C.

Rachel Garrison Gloer '00 has completed her master's degree in social work from Baylor University and is a licensed social worker in the state of Texas . She is currently serving as youth minister at Beacon Hill Baptist Church and is finishing her master's of divinity degree from George W. Truett Seminary at Baylor. Rachel has recently accepted a job at the Methodist Children's Home of Waco where she will serve as a social worker. Jeremy Gloer '04 is a police officer for the Hillsboro , Texas , Police Department and is beginning his studies for a master's of forensic science. He is also an assistant music minister at the Beacon Hill Baptist Church . Rachel and Jeremy reside in Woodway , Texas .

Patricia “Tricia” McCracken Mendel '00 received her master's degree in education technology from Mid-American Nazarene University . Tricia teaches in the Kearney , Mo. , school district. She and Tom Mendell '00 reside in Kansas City North.

Ann Pittman '00 recently received her master's of divinity degree from George W. Truett Seminary at Baylor University , Waco , Tex.

Amy Mudd Patel '01 has recently been appointed to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Currently, Amy is a U. S. Foreign Service Officer in Vietnam , but the new appointment will be in Durban , South Africa . Amy and Nitesh Patel '01 presently reside in Ho Chi Minh. They will leave Vietnam in March, 2005, coming back to the states for vacation and training, and leave for South Africa in June of 2005.

Jennifer Wynkoop Garten '01 is the sign language interpreter for The Continental Singers. Her husband, Todd, is the talent manager for the same group. They reside in Ventura , Calif.

Jessica Schulz '02 recently received her master's degree in family studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Jessica now resides in Liberty , Mo.

Amanda Smith '02 recently graduated from the Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia with a master's degree in public administration. She has started a new job as a management trainee in the County Manager 's Office in Dade County ( Miami ), Fla.
