Reunions
It’s never too early to begin planning
to attend alumni reunions on the Hill.As
reported in the summer special edition of
Notes from the Hill,even last spring’s
severe tornado damage couldn’t dampen
the enthusiasm of members of the classes
of 1933,1943 and 1953,who enjoyed special
reunion events during Alumni Weekend last
spring.
The classes of 1934,1944 and 1954 will
enjoy similar events this year. Mark the

1940s
Earl Wayne Minor ’40 is
celebrating his sixtyfourth year of ordination.
His family has established the Earl Wayne Minor
Memorial Scholarship at Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Louisville,Ky. This scholarship will
be awarded to students pursuing a career in the
Chaplaincy of the United States Armed Forces.
1950s
John Riley ’50 has been
asked to come out of retirement as an Episcopal
priest to join the staff of St. John’s Cathedral
in Jacksonville, Fla. In essence, he will provide
a chaplaincy to some 700 senior citizens and to
some 60 patients in a convalescent center owned
by the Cathedral. Juarenne Moore Hester ’55
was named “Liberty’s 2003 Civic Leader
of the Year” at the West Gate Division of
the Missouri Municipal League banquet. She is
the Third Ward Councilwoman for the city of Liberty.
Juarenne is vice president of the Corbin Theatre
Company, a non-profit organization formed to bring
theater to Liberty Square; a Clay County Museum
and Historical Society board member; and a Liberty
Hospital Foundation honorary trustee.
Gerald Phillips ’58 was
recently honored with a reception celebrating
his 50th anniversary of ordination. Gerald was
ordained on July 19, 1953, at the Calvary Baptist
Church in White Hall, Ill.
1960s
William Dreyer ’60, current
Trustee at William Jewell College, has been named
Councilor of the Executive Council of Kappa Alpha.
This announcement was made at the 70th KA Convention
in Tampa, Fla. Bill and his wife, Linda Hill Dreyer
’61, live in San Antonio,Texas. J. Stanley
Lemons ’60 is the recipient of the American
Association for State and Local History Award
of Merit for lifelong service to the field. This
award was presented at a special banquet during
the 2003 AASLH Annual Meeting on September 19,
2003, in Providence, R.I. The awards program was
initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards
of excellence in the collection, preservation
and interpretation of state and local history
throughout America. Stanley and his wife, Linda
Busserman, live in Greenville, R.I. Jo Ellen Hawkins
Witt ’61 has recently moved Bayside,Wis.
She is the new minister at Roundy Memorial Church,Whitefish
Bay,Wis.
Jim Crain ’67, a Grandview,
MO Alderman,was presented with the state-wide
Public Official Achievement Award at the Missouri
Park & Recreation Association’s annual
conference this spring at the Hyatt Regency Crown
Center Hotel in Kansas City. A video was shown
highlighting Jim’s 22 years as the Grandview
Board of Aldermen’s Liaison to the Parks
& Recreation Commission.
Lawrence E. Dickerson III ’69
has recently published a book entitled Creating
Healthy Communities,The Process of Community Discovery.
He has been elected to a three-year term on the
Board of Directors to the International Community
Development Society. In June, Larry provided community
development training to the Australia Aboriginal
organizations and to communities in various sites
in Australia; in July, he did professional development
training on the Healthy Community Approach for
persons from six continents; and in August, he
did development training with the Indigenous Villages
in Chukotka Russian Far East. Larry lives in Anchorage,Alaska.
1970s
Patricia Zwiebel Petty ’77
and Robert Petty ’76 have
returned to Liberty, where they reside in the
former Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house. Trisha
was recently named Director of Alumni Relations
at William Jewell College and Bob is employed
at Cerner Corporation as a Learning Specialist.
Dr. John W. Richmond ’77 has been named
Professor and Director of the University of Nebraska
– Lincoln School of Music in the Hixson-Lied
College of Fine and Performing Arts. He and his
wife, Jill (Watts ’78), reside in Lincoln,
Neb.
Sally M. Masters ’79
has been promoted to Director of Guidance at Hampshire
Regional High School, Westhampton, Mass. Four
years ago, Sally moved to western Massachusetts
to pursue an advanced degree in school counseling
in preparation for a career change from higher
education administration to guidance counseling.
She received her Certificate of Advanced Graduate
Study from the University of Massachusetts.
1980s
Julie Runtz Welch ’81
was recently honored at the Kansas City Business
Journal’s luncheon for the top 25 Women
in Small Businesses. This annual program recognizes
area businesswomen for their business achievements
and public involvement. Julie is a partner and
CPA with the firm of Meara, King & Company
in Kansas City,Mo.
Larry D.Thompson ’83
is a partner in a new corporation – Vantage
Point Solutions in Mitchell, S.D. The firm provides
consulting and engineering solutions to the small
rural telephone companies.
Karen Edison ’85, associate
professor of clinical medicine, has been named
the new chair of the Department of Dermatology
at the University of Missouri – Columbia
School of Medicine. Dr. Edison will become the
first female chair of the school’s more
than 150-year history. She is nationally recognized
for her efforts to improve telehealth and health
policy. She will continue to serve as medical
director of the Missouri Telehealth Network and
co-chair of the Center for Health Policy. Dr.
Edison assumed those roles after serving as a
Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow in Washington,D.C.
Kimberly Durnell Hassler ’83
and John Hassler ’86 have
recently moved from Montreal, Canada, back to
the Kansas City area. John is the Vice President
of Administration and Planning at Teva Neuroscience.
Last year, Kimberly received her M.A. in Educational
Studies from McGill University in Montreal.
Patricia J. Reed ’88 recently
completed her service as music & drama teacher
at Taejon Christian International School in South
Korea, where she had been teaching for 13 years.
After receiving her master’s degree in music
education from Central Missouri State University
this spring, she is preparing for her new music
& drama teaching post with the Saudi Aramco
School in Saudi Arabia.
1990s Wade C.Rowatt ’91, Ph.D.,
recently received tenure in the Department of
Psychology & Neuroscience at Baylor University,Waco,Texas.
Dusty R. Davis ’92 is the new administrator
of the Monterey Park Nursing Home in Independence,Mo.
Sharon Lappin ’92 has
joined the Boyle Engineering Corporation as an
Associate Civil Engineer in its Sarasota, Fla.,
office. Sharon has recently received the distinguished
recognition of being named the Young Engineer
of the Year by the Missouri Society of Professional
Engineers. Sharon now lives in Sarasota.
Tracey Bruce Morton ’96
recently received her National Board of Professional
Teaching Standards certification. She is currently
teaching kindergarten at Bryan Elementary School
in Independence,Mo. Tracy and her husband, Jason,
reside in Independence with their son, Nate.
Amy Buckler ’96 has been
appointed print research assistant for Barkley
Evergreen & Partners in Kansas City.
Umeme Battle ’97 is the
Branch Corporate Account Manager for Enterprise
Rent-A-Car in Overland Park, Kan. He and his wife,
Julie, and their two children live in Kansas City.
Laura Hall Wyas ’97 is
the Social Studies teacher and 8th grade team
leader at Orchard Farm Middle School in St. Charles,Mo.
Cara Townsend ’99 is
now a lobbyist for the Dutko Group.

Katherine Cafferty ’01
has begun studying for an M.A. in Global Political
Economy at the University of Sussex in England.
