Dr. Mel George
Distinguished Visiting Professor
Dr. Mel George earned a B.A. degree from Northwestern University in 1956 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1959. He has devoted much of his career to the study of mathematics education and led the National Science Foundation’s comprehensive review of undergraduate science, mathematics engineering and technology education.
He was president of St. Olaf College from 1985 until his retirement as president emeritus in 1994. Dr. George served as interim president of the University of Missouri System twice in the past 25 years and was named honorary president emeritus in 1997, the only interim president of the University of Missouri to receive that honor.
Since leaving his position at the University of Missouri, Dr. George has served as a consultant to numerous higher education organizations. He recently led a strategic planning initiative at the National Research Council’s Center for Education.
