In an increasingly complex global society, specialists who excel in only one discipline or subject area are rare. To be fully prepared to meet the challenges of today’s world, you must be capable of placing issues within a larger context rather than isolating them within rigidly defined subject areas.
The "Responsible Self" General Education Program at William Jewell College is designed to help you develop a realistic world view in which contemporary issues are placed against a backdrop of relevant historical, cultural and ethical ideas. In this interdisciplinary core curriculum, you’ll consider the social sciences alongside the laws governing the natural world; you’ll study religion in relation to the social settings from which it developed; and you’ll measure technological advances against the ethical dilemmas they sometimes create.
The General Education curriculum builds through three stages: an introductory/skills level, an intermediate interdisciplinary level and an advanced capstone level. During the team-taught, interdisciplinary capstone course you are challenged to bring critical thinking skills to bear on relevant contemporary, multi-dimensional issues.
