Distinctive Programs: Emerging Leaders

From the start of your first year at Jewell, you are invited to explore the nature and practice of leadership through the Emerging Leaders Conference.

The Conference identifies first-year students with demonstrated leadership skills. During an intensive weekend retreat, you examine your leadership style, talents and experiences, resulting in new insights into personal approaches to leadership.

The Conference offers a series of seminars conducted by Jewell faculty members, administrators and students. You complete a reflective essay on your personal leadership role model.

Later in the year, the Conference hosts an honors banquet for family and friends to celebrate the Emerging Leaders and recognize the best essay on a leadership role model. The Emerging Leaders, as a group, also create and implement a service project to emphasize the importance of servant leadership.

Student Quote:
This program served as a starting block for my leadership development in college. It was the first time I considered my own leadership style. The Emerging Leaders Program helped me to see how one can match their strengths and weaknesses with others to achieve an even greater outcome.

- Celeste Brunner ‘05, 2003 Emerging Leaders Director, a 2002 Emerging Leader and Recipient of the 2002 Gary D. Phelps Mentor of the Year Award.
