William Jewell College students are receiving national awards and recognitions as the 2003-04 academic year winds down. Among the highlights:
Junior Anthony Shop has received the prestigious Truman Scholarship. More than 200 finalists from 146 U.S. institutions of higher learning competed for the national public service scholarships. The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as the federal memorial to the nation’s 33rd president. The Foundation awards scholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service.
Sarah Haller has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship. The junior biology major plans to pursue a Ph.D. in biology, with career goals of teaching at the university level and conducting research in plant ecology. Haller was selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,113 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premiere undergraduate award of its type in these fields. The scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
The William Jewell College debate team of Phil Fuhrman and Luke Landry was ranked 13th in the nation following the recent National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence competition held in Berkeley, Calif. Bids are competitively assigned based on team success throughout the academic year. Fuhrman and Landry were ranked in the top 20 for much of the year. The bids marked the first year Jewell has been represented at the tournament.
Adam Stout has been selected as the recipient of the 2004 Heart of America Athletic Conference Emil S. Liston Award. Stout is a junior mathematics and business administration major at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. As a regional award recipient, Stout is contending for the national Liston Award. National award winners are chosen by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Council of Faculty Athletics Representatives from a field that includes nominees from the NAIA’s 332 member institutions.
Sarah Staton, daughter of Carolyn Staton of Liberty, Mo., has been accepted as a presenter at the Council on Undergraduate Research’s “Posters on the Hill,” to be held April 20 in Washington, D.C. Sarah is a senior biochemistry major at William Jewell College.
Sean Riordan, a sophomore Oxbridge molecular biology major, has received an undergraduate research fellowship from the American Society for Microbiology. The award carries with it a $4,000 stipend along with supply and travel monies to attend the society’s national conference next year. About 30 undergraduate research fellowships are awarded nationally each year.
Students and faculty from William Jewell College’s departments of chemistry and biology attended the recent American Chemical Society annual meeting held in Anaheim, Calif. Students presented the results of their faculty-directed research projects.
