The goal of Counseling Services at William Jewell College is to enhance students’ educational experience by providing a safe environment for all students to seek support and assistance in resolving personal concerns. Students often seek counseling in an effort to cope more effectively with the multi-faceted demands of college. Students may access free and confidential counseling on campus through Counseling Services.

Crisis Intervention is available through Counseling Services. Call the Counseling Center at ext. 5246 or stop by 310 Yates to speak to a therapist.
If you need emergency medical intervention, contact your RA, RD, or call campus security at ext. 1411. Any college staff member will arrange transportation to the nearest hospital emergency room.
Individual Psychotherapy
Individual Psychotherapy provides the opportunity to talk to a therapist on a one-on-one basis to explore, understand, and process, personal and educational concerns. Students seek individual psychotherapy to address a wide range of issue that interfere with their college experience such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, family issues, grief and loss, eating disorders, substance abuse, cultural identity, adjustment problems, and academic concerns. Each session is 45-50 minutes. With a few exceptions, there is a 12-session limit per academic year.
Group Psychotherapy
Students have the opportunity to explore relevant issues, gain understanding of themselves, and provide peer support in the context of a group setting. Psychoeducational groups are offered to address specific issues such as stress management, eating disorders, drug/alcohol use, or family functioning. General psychotherapy groups may be offered to provide particular support within a group format to students who present with a variety of psychological concerns. The Counseling Center offers group therapy experiences throughout the year depending upon interest and need. Please contact the counseling center for more specific information regarding group therapy opportunities.
Consultation, Outreach, & Prevention
The counseling center provides consultation to the college community regarding mental health, assessment, and student life concerns. For emergency consultation, contact the Center at any time. If your group has a need for a specific program, contact the center to make arrangements for a group presentation or workshop.
Accommodation Requests & Facilitation
For students who have special needs, the Counseling Center provides assistance in arranging classroom accommodations and facilitates the development of useful strategies to effectively cope with the stressors of college life. Students who have been diagnosed with a learning disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or other disorder that may require special classroom accommodations are encouraged to notify the office of student affairs (see pg. 5 of the Student Handbook for the College’s specific guidelines for Students with Disabilities). Requests must include documentation that supports the existence of the diagnosis including assessment data and/or psychological testing results. The assessment must have been completed within the last two years by a licensed clinician.
Outside Referral
If students require more specialized or comprehensive treatment than the Counseling Center can provide, or if an off-campus therapist is preferred, clinical staff can facilitate a referral to a community practitioner or resource.
