Nursing at Jewell: Accelerated Track

In response to community and national needs, the William Jewell College department of nursing received approval by the Missouri State Board of Nursing on December 5, 2002 to begin an Accelerated Track (AT) program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting the need for a million new and replacement registered nurses by the year 2010. Colleges of nursing are finding that accelerated BSN degree programs to be a creative way to increase student capacity and reach out to new student populations, while maintaining integrity and quality of nursing education (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2002).

What is the BSN-AT program at William Jewell?

  • A 12-month program that allows those with a BA or BS degree in other fields to study nursing for a calendar year and graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.

What is needed to be eligible for the BSN-AT program?

  • A minimum of a 2.5 GPA and C’s in all sciences
  • A BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university
  • Prerequisite courses completed before May 15, 2005:
    1. Introductory Psychology
    2. Anatomy with a lab
    3. Physiology with a lab
    4. Microbiology with a lab
    5. Chemistry with a lab
    6. Abnormal Psychology
    7. Nutrition

How are students selected?

Selection is based upon:
  • Completion of an application which includes original transcripts of all colleges attended with a BA or BS degree
  • GPA of at least 2.50
  • Prerequisite courses completed prior to the beginning of nursing classes
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A personal interview with members of the nursing faculty

  • An essay: that includes a summary of community volunteer and health related experience

What classes will the BSN-AT students be taking?

  • Two sessions in the Summer: Session I will include Fundamentals, Assessment, Pathophysiology; Session II will consist of Adult Health and Pharmacology

  • Fall Semester: Child Health, Parent/Newborn, Mental Health, and Nursing Research
  • Spring Semester: Advanced Adult Health, Management/Leadership, Internship, and Community Health.

  • The AT students will join the current senior nursing students during the fall semester. All students graduating from William Jewell nursing receive the same classes.

    Sue Lasiter, MSN, RN is the coordinator for the accelerated track.

Also complete an Application for Admission to William Jewell College is required.
