Spanish Activities Fall 2003

Campus organized events include:
    Film: 30 September 2003

  • Real Women Have Curves
    (USA, 2002, 86 minutes),
7:30 p.m., Center for Educational Diversity

A young woman learns to love herself in spite of her job, weight, family and socioeconomic standing in this touchingly funny coming-of-age story from first-time director Patricia Cardoso. When Ana graduates from high school, she wants to go to college but ends up working at her sister's dressmaking factory. While there, she awakens her co-workers, family and friends to the injustices of the business and learns a lot about herself in the process. America Ferrera is outstanding as the blossoming Ana in this award-winning film. "Two thumbs up" (Ebert & Roeper).

  • Fiesta Hispana, Barney Allis Plaza in Kansas City, September 13 and 14. Students will be invited to travel to the celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The festival features folkloric dance, musical groups, food, arts and crafts and information booths.

  • Día de los Muertos, CED, October 31: Classes celebrate the day of the dead throughout the day by engaging in activities related to the holiday. Each class will create an altar in memory of loved ones who have died, bringing mementos of their lives and telling stories (¡en español!).

  • Language Day, Nov. 5, 2003. High school and college students are invited to participate in Language Day from 9:00 to 11:30am. Jennie Mendez from the Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery will present slides from the Day of the Dead exhibit at the gallery, then will lead the students in hands-on art project relating to the celebration of that day. International students will highlight artists from their countries that exemplify important cultural realities.
