ART
As an art student at William Jewell College, you experience the best of an art institute program within a liberal arts setting. This two-pronged approach gives you a broader, more relevant experience from which you will build your life. You have the opportunity to experiment, create, and develop your talent with gifted faculty who know you personally.
Your classes are small, no more than 15 students, and one-on-one instruction is the norm. This personal care and attention to developing your artistic skill is why Jewell's students win national honors from groups such as the Society of Illustrators, the National Liquitex Awards, the Pew Younger Scholar Award and Cloisters Internships.
During your time at Jewell, you may choose to study with one of our many art graduates via a mentoring opportunity. Or you may choose an internship with one of the major U.S. or international firms in the area (William Jewell's campus is only 20 minutes from Downtown Kansas City). And you might spend a summer, semester or a full year in one of our overseas study programs in England, France, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong or elsewhere.
Our close proximity to Kansas City offers you a wide variety of arts opportunities, including museums such as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art or any of the many galleries showcasing local, national and international artists and their work.
Your senior year exhibition serves as the capstone to your art studies. Within our own Stocksdale Gallery, located in Brown Hall on Jewell's campus, you will experience the culmination of your art studies as you prepare and display your senior art show.
Your Bachelor of Arts in art is awarded upon completion of at least 36 hours of required and elective art courses, built around a wide array of courses, including courses in art history and studio classes. All of this will lead to your senior year when you learn about the "business" of art. As an artist, you learn how to write an art resume, shoot slides of your work, create your artist's statement and develop your presentation portfolio. These skills, combined with your Senior Exhibition, help prepare you to market yourself as an artist.
The art department is concentrated on the lower level of Brown Hall, comprising a multi-purpose studio, art offices, well-equipped ceramics studio and a workshop. The Stocksdale Gallery, on the top floor of Brown Hall, is the home for art exhibitions and also hosts a variety of national, regional and local artists throughout the year.
