Caroline Emma "Carrie" Watkins was the ninth of eleven children born to Waltus L. and Mary Ann Holloway Watkins. Born on July 1, 1854, Carrie began collecting recipes sometime between the ages of 14 and 15. This web site is a record of those recipes, ingredient lists, and cleaning solutions that she used during her lifetime.

Carrie's cookbook was found in one of several trunks given to William Jewell College's Charles F. Curry Library in the late 1970's. The recipes were in a ledger following the 1844 to 1851 minutes of school Township No. 1 in Clay County.

The cookbook was first authenticated by the Site Administrator for Watkins Woolen Mill in Lawson, Missouri. A copy of the original cookbook was given to the Watkins Woolen Mill Historic Site. Ann Sligar, Historic Site Administrator, transcribed the recipes and staff began to try selected recipes for their Living History Farm Program.

We hope you enjoy these recipes.
