Lot 10, Jewell’s Subdivision of Wilson’s Addition to the City of Liberty

The United States sells 80 acres to Andrew Hickson located in the west half of the northwest quarter of section 8 in township 51 (north of the Missouri River) of range 31 west of the 5th principal meridian in the Western Land District of Missouri.

Andrew and Ann Hickson sell to Mary Rawlings the following to wit: “It being three lots and one half acre in the addition to the town of Liberty made by said Hickson, and the lots known on the plat of said addition as lots numbered 15, 14, 13 and the half acre lying north of lot numbered 13and to be the same length east and west as said lots and to run north half as far.  There is an alley 10 ½ feet wide running between the lots but no alley between the half acre and lot number 13, containing in all 3 ½ acres.”

 

January 23, 1839                                Warranty Deed                                  $3,000

Andrew and Ann Hickson sell to John Wilson the west half of the northwest quarter of section 8, in township 51 north range 31 west.  The sale is of land except the following which has been broken up into lots and they are numbered as: 1 through 17 and the south half of 20 and ½ acre south of lot 1, also four acres laying in a square north of lots 17 & 18, also an acre hereforto deeded to the corporation of Liberty for a burying ground and a slip lying east of the burying ground and between it and the line running north and south on the east side of said half quarter.

 

October 5, 1839                                  Plat Dedication

John and Margaret Wilson give to the City of Liberty in the following language:

“Know all men by these presents that we, John Wilson and Margaret Wilson, his wife, having this day filed in the recorders office a plat of an addition made to the town of Liberty.  Now know ye, that we hereby give, grant, release and confirm until the citizens of the town of Liberty all the streets and alleys to be forever kept down in said plan or plat for public highways to be forever kept open and used as such relinquishing all rights and titles to the same.”                                          John Wilson

Mary Rawlings, John and Margaret Wilson sell to Howard Everett lots in the addition made to the town of Liberty by John Wilson as lots numbered 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 38, and that part of 37 lying between the graveyard lot and lots numbered 13 and 20 lying east of said lots, the whole containing 24 acres, the streets and alleys as laid down on the plat aforesaid excepted.”

Howard and Sarah Everett sell to Frederick A. H. Garlichs lots numbered 14, 15, 18, 19, and 20 in John Wilson’s addition to the town of Liberty in the county of Clay and state of Missouri.  Also lots numbered 37 in said addition except that part of 37 which is set aside for the town graveyard.

Frederick and Mathilda Garlichs sell to James M. Davis the same land as above.

The graveyard is still mentioned and its size is estimated at 8 ¾ acres which is much larger than the current graveyard.

John T. Coleman sues James M. Davis and Adelaide Parker for $111.80 plus court costs and in payment Davis looses the property mentioned before.  Lots 13, 14, 15, 18, 19 and part of 37 not set aside for the graveyard.

Jewell Addition to the City of Liberty is given to the public being a part of the west half of the northwest quarter of section 8 in township 51 north, range 31 west.  Beginning at a point 16 ½ feet east of the southeast corner of lot 16 in Wilson’s addition to the city of Liberty, said pint being 1,349.9 feet south and 259.3 feet east of the northwest corner of said section 8 and in the north line of Mississippi Street, thence east in the north line of said street 435 feet, thence north 432.5 feet, thence west 435.05 feet, thence south 434.5 feet to the point of beginning.

Dr. Charles Smith was professor of history and political science at William Jewell College from 1890 to 1898 according to a Student Handbook of the period.  He was the instigator for the William Jewell Student, a news publication.  The organizations that took on the paper were the “Philomathic, Excelsior and Evangelical Societies.”  He also was a leading contributor in the forensic department at the college.  In 1899 Dr. Smith was the Secretary of the Faculty and the curator of the Library.

Charles & Sallie Smith to Peyton A. & Laura Eubank

 

1900 Census shows that Peyton and Laura Eubank are living in Lamar, Prowers County, Colorado.   In 1910 they are listed in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri.

 

Peyton Adams Eubank was the son of Achilles & Mary E. Eubank of Clark County, Kentucky, Baptists of the Old School and farmers by occupation.  He was born January 13, 1857 at Kiddville, Clark County, Kentucky.  He married Laura Boardman Houchens on May 4, 1882 in Sturgeon, Kentucky.  Shortly after being ordained they left for Lagos, West Africa [now in Nigeria] as Missionaries with the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board.  They were in Africa for 10 years.  After they returned, he pastured in the following locations:  East Sedalia Baptist Church (5 years); District Missionary – Harmony Association Pettis County (1 year); First Baptist Church Butler (2 years); and he organized Lamar Baptist Church – Lamar, Colorado (2 years).  They moved to Liberty, Clay County, Missouri in 1904 so their children could attend William Jewell College and Liberty Ladies College.  They left for Eureka Springs, Arkansas in 1912.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Obituary – Friday, December 11, 1914 Liberty Tribune

Word came to Sharp Brothers Wednesday morning of the death of Rev. P. A. Eubank of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he had been living of late.  Rev. Eubank was preparing to start on a trip to Florida when he was stricken with paralysis.  The remains were brought to Liberty Thursday morning for burial.  Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 2:30 in the afternoon conducted by the Rev. C. F. D. Arnold.  The internment was in the family plot at Old Cemetery [Mt. Memorial].  Rev. Eubank and family lived in Liberty several years on East. Mississippi Street.  They moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas last year where he was pastor of a Baptist Church.  A daughter died since they moved to Arkansas and was brought back for burial.  Rev. Eubank is survived by his wife, and two children.  Earl, who has been in Chicago, and Lillian, at home.  The death of this good man is deeply regretted by the many friends here, who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family.

 

Obituary – Monday, April 19, 1943 Liberty Advance

Mrs. Payton Adams Eubank, who with her husband, was a resident of Liberty for many years, died at the home of her daughter, Miss Lillian Eubank at Lewiston, Maine, on April 11.  The former Miss Laura Houchens, Mrs. Eubank and the Rev. Eubank, former Missionaries to West Africa under the Foreign Missions Board of the Southern Baptist Convention lived in Liberty at 216 East Mississippi Street while their son was a student at William Jewell College and their daughter was attending Liberty Ladies College.  They have a wide circle of relatives in Liberty and Kansas City vicinity.  Besides her daughter, at whose home she was staying at the time of her death, Mrs. Eubank is survived by a son, Earl Eubank of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio and three granddaughters: Mrs. Josiah Reed Bartlett of the University of Washington in Seattle, Miss Laurel Eubank of Denison University at Granville, Ohio, and Miss Lois Eubank who is doing graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley.
