Special Collections

Use of Special Collections is by appointment. Please check with the Special Collections Librarian, Office Number 105, for appointment times. After prior arrangement, Collection materials may be secured at the circulation desk. The materials are to be used in specially assigned rooms in the library.

 

Alumni Collection (56K)

The Alumni Collection consists of monographs written by William Jewell alums. To view all of the titles, go to the Library's online catalog and search using Subject (Library of Congress) with the entry of William Jewell College-Alumni and alumnae. The Library attempts to keep up-to-date on publications written by graduates and appreciates gift copies when possible.

Digitization Projects

View the first of many digitization projects initiated by the Library. Ms. Carrie Watkins' cookbook, a series of recipes first written in the latter part of the 19th century, can be viewed in its original version.

Herget

Given by Dr. John F. Herget, these Limited Editions Club books are printed on special paper, illustrated by a talented artist, or bound in a unique fashion.

Jewelliana

Archival records of the college as well as articles and books published by faculty are kept in the Jewelliana Collection. Included are printed works, photographs, maps, paintings and newspapers.

 

Lenski Collection

 

Miss Lois Lenski, well known writer and illustrator of children's books, presented books and original illustrations to the Library in 1958. Here is one example of an original illustration. 

Littleford Collection

A gift of Mr. Frank Littleford, this donation consists of materials related to various world conflicts involving the United States.

Mertins Collection

Given to the library by Louis Mertins, the collection contains autographed books and silhouettes of famous persons. Dr. John A. Canuteson, Professor of English, studied the collection in 1995 and prepared a document that describes selected items.

Missouri Collection

The Missouri Collection, established in 1970, emphasizes western Missouri history. Special emphasis is given to acquiring material on Clay County and Liberty.

Settle Collection

Given to the library in 1974 by Mrs. Pauline Sharp, daughter of Rev. Raymond W. Settle, this collection is comprised of books, periodicals, manuscripts and photographs covering various aspects of Western Americana.

Spurgeon Collection

In 1906, the private library of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, well-known English Baptist minister, was given to the library by friends of the college. The collection is rich in the writings of the Puritan thinkers, but all areas of knowledge are represented. There are many books which were printed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
